Globe valves, gate valves, and check valves are the three most common valve types in high-pressure service, each with unique functional roles. Three Valve Types: Functional Roles
Globe Valve: Provides both isolation and flow regulation. Higher flow resistance but excellent throttling characteristics. Used where flow control is needed.
Gate Valve: Pure on-off isolation with lowest flow resistance among the three types. Not suitable for throttling — use only fully open or fully closed. Preferred for full-bore pigging service.
Check Valve: Prevents reverse flow automatically. Installed at pump discharge and wherever backflow prevention is critical.

High-Pressure Valve Materials & Construction

Disc and seat sealing surfaces are Stellite hard-faced (HRC 38-45) for wear and erosion resistance. Q1: Does globe valve installation direction matter?
A: Yes. Globe valves must be installed with flow entering under the disc and exiting above (arrow direction on body). Reverse installation prevents proper closure and can damage the disc.
Q2: Why aren't gate valves suitable for throttling?
A: In partially open position, the gate vibrates and erodes, causing rapid sealing surface wear. Gate valve flow characteristics are also poorly suited to accurate flow control.
