Stainless Steel Reducers: Correct Selection for Concentric & Eccentric Pipe Transitions

Jun 05, 2026

Introduction: The 'Throat' of Piping Systems
When fluid transitions from a larger to a smaller pipe — or enters equipment with a different port size — a stainless steel reducer provides the smooth diameter transition. Correctly choosing between concentric and eccentric reducers significantly impacts flow patterns and system drainage/venting performance. Wenqiang Stainless Steel supplies both concentric and eccentric reducers in all standard sizes.

Concentric vs. Eccentric Reducers
Concentric Reducers: Large and small ends share the same centerline axis. Used for vertical piping and horizontal piping where air/liquid accumulation is not a concern. Fluid undergoes uniform velocity change with no flow deviation.
Eccentric Reducers: One side (top or bottom) is flat while the other tapers. Bottom-Flat (BF) type: used on horizontal piping for bottom drainage. Top-Flat (FT or TF) type: used for top venting. At pump suction connections, bottom-flat eccentric reducers are standard to prevent gas accumulation and cavitation.

Selection Decision Tree
Vertical piping → Concentric reducer
Horizontal piping (liquid service) → Bottom-flat eccentric reducer
Horizontal piping (gas service) → Top-flat eccentric reducer
Pump suction → Bottom-flat eccentric reducer (prevent cavitation)
Pump discharge → Concentric reducer acceptable

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: How is reducer length determined?
A: Standard reducer lengths are defined by GB/T 12459 or ASME B16.9 based on the diameter change. For example, a DN100×DN50 concentric reducer has a standard length of approximately 89mm. Wenqiang can produce extended or shortened lengths per customer requirements.
Q2: Can eccentric reducers replace concentric ones?
A: Technically yes, but it is not recommended on vertical piping where eccentric design causes flow deviation and affects hydraulic performance.
Q3: What is Wenqiang's size range for reducers?
A: Wenqiang supplies DN15×DN10 through DN600×DN500 in both concentric and eccentric configurations, covering 304/316L/321/2205 and other grades.
