High-Pressure Boiler Tube Selection Guide: Ensuring Safe Power Plant Operations

May 29, 2026

Introduction: Boiler Tubes — The Lifeline of Power Plants
In thermal power plants, nuclear conventional islands, and waste heat recovery systems, high-pressure boiler tubes operate under extreme conditions: temperatures of 400-650°C and pressures of 10-30 MPa. These tubes are critical safety components — incorrect material selection or quality deficiencies can lead to tube rupture, leakage, or catastrophic failure. Wenqiang Stainless Steel manufactures GB/T 5310 and ASTM A213 high-pressure boiler tubes for domestic and international power projects.

Three Principles of Boiler Tube Material Selection
1. High-Temperature Creep Strength: The tube material must maintain adequate creep rupture strength at the design temperature over 100,000 hours of service. 304H (S30409) provides an allowable stress of approximately 56 MPa at 600°C, making it a standard choice for subcritical superheater tubes.
2. Oxidation Resistance: High-temperature steam and flue gas environments demand excellent resistance to oxidation and steam-side oxide scale spallation. Austenitic stainless steels with ≥18% Cr content excel in this regard.
3. Microstructural Stability: During long-term high-temperature service, harmful phase transformations (e.g., sigma phase precipitation) must be avoided. 316H outperforms 304H in structural stability below 650°C due to its molybdenum content.

Common Grades & Standard Cross-Reference
304H (TP304H / 12Cr18Ni9): Service temperature ≤650°C — Superheater/reheater tubes
316H (TP316H / 0Cr17Ni12Mo2): Service temperature ≤650°C — High-temperature steam lines
321H (TP321H / 1Cr18Ni9Ti): Service temperature ≤650°C — Header connection tubes
347H (TP347H / 0Cr18Ni11Nb): Service temperature ≤700°C — Supercritical units
T91/P91 (10Cr9Mo1VNb): Service temperature ≤625°C — Main steam piping

Wenqiang's Quality Control System
Wenqiang's high-pressure boiler tube production follows a 'zero defect' quality philosophy: 100% spectrographic analysis of incoming materials; dimensional inspection at every cold-drawing pass; 100% eddy current testing + ultrasonic testing + hydrostatic testing (at 1.5× working pressure) on finished products; complete mechanical property (tensile, impact, hardness) and intergranular corrosion test reports for each heat number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What's the difference between boiler tubes and standard fluid pipes?
A: Key differences: 1) Stricter material requirements for high-temperature creep strength; 2) More comprehensive inspection — 100% NDT and hydrostatic test on each tube; 3) Different applicable standards — boiler tubes follow GB/T 5310 or ASTM A213 vs. GB/T 14976 or ASTM A312 for fluid pipes.
Q2: What's the difference between 304H and 304?
A: 304H has carbon content controlled at 0.04-0.10%, higher than 304's ≤0.08%. The elevated carbon improves high-temperature creep strength for long-term service above 500°C.
Q3: What size range can Wenqiang produce for boiler tubes?
A: Wenqiang manufactures high-pressure boiler seamless tubes from 6mm to 630mm OD with wall thickness 0.5mm to 50mm, covering everything from small-bore instrument tubing to large main steam piping.
